Digital Technologies for Communicative Purposes This course is designed to critically examine a variety of different digital technologies and their potential as tools for second language acquisition (SLA). Throughout this course, students will evaluate the effectiveness of both synchronous and asynchronous technologies and their role in communicative competencies and other contributing factors to language gain through SLA theory and up-to-date research.
Intercultural Communication & Study Abroad This course is designed to provide a forum to critically reflect upon study abroad experiences in order to gain an in-depth understanding of intercultural communication. Throughout this course, students will have the opportunity to use their own lived experiences of cultural events, student life, interpersonal relationships, language learning, etc. while abroad to develop the ability to engage cross-culturally. Some of the themes in this course include individual identity, stereotypes, patterns of both verbal and nonverbal communication, social membership, among others, but most importantly, this course is designed to facilitate transformative learning.
Preparation for Language Study Abroad This course is designed to critically examine strategies for promoting both linguistic and cultural competence during study abroad programming. In order to prepare students for future study abroad experiences (and inform instructors and program coordinators alike), this course will take a theoretical approach to sociolinguistic competency by exploring a number of methods of acquiring language proficiency within the study abroad context. Topics will include foundational theories of second/foreign language acquisition, acquisition of the vernacular, informal and formal constructions, attention to regional language differences including accent variation, and other sociolinguistic themes such as cultural awareness, language contact, and social networking.
Spanish Conversation This course offers variety of guided conversations in Spanish dealing with a selection of issues in contemporary Hispanic World (Spain, North America, Mexico and the Caribbean, Central and South America). Students will develop their communicative skills in Spanish through discussion of a number of topics, ranging from social and political issues to technology, culture, films, music, food, and sports with the goal, of improving oral fluency. Speaking with greater confidence, comprehending everyday spoken language, and broadening cultural awareness relating to the Hispanic world.
Communicative Skills for English Language Writing, Research & Citation This course is made up of 6 comprehensive, bi-weekly modules with intermittent in-class assessments aimed at cultivating and developing academic English language skills, focusing specifically on written competence in order to provide students with the proficiency necessary to be successful within a study abroad context. These modules are centered on the following themes: Academic Writing, Persuasion, Essay Organization, Academic Research Citation, Using Academic Sources, Academic Formatting, and Revision.
Communicative Skills for English Language Listening & Speaking This course is made up of 6 comprehensive, bi-weekly modules with intermittent in-class assessments aimed at cultivating and developing academic English language skills, focusing specifically on oral competence in order to provide students with the proficiency necessary to be successful within a study abroad context. These modules are centered on the following themes: Academic Listening, Note Taking, Academic Speaking, Oral Assessments, Pronunciation, and Pragmatic Competency,
Teacher Methodologies for English Language Skills (Online) This course is designed to enhance both English language skills and pedagogical awareness for teachers aiming to further their practice as language educators. Topics include: Teaching Methodologies, Teaching Principles, Individual Taxonomies & Learning Styles, Teaching the Four Language Skills, Assessment, Language & Culture, and Technology.
Fundamentals of Academic Writing for International Students This course introduces academic writing skills to international students, including topics such as sentence and paragraph structure, topic sentences and thesis statements, introductions and conclusions, revision, the appropriate use of source materials and plagiarism. Assignments include cause/effect, compare/contrast, and argumentative essay, as well as grammar testing.
Advanced Academic Writing for International Students This research-intensive course provides international students with the opportunity to refine their writing and research skills and incorporate citations through the writing process as well as practice principles of strong arguments and support. As well, the fundamental rules of grammar are emphasized within written assignments, including proposals, an annotated bibliography and major research paper.
Critical Reading and Effective Writing This course emphasizes academic vocabulary and critical reading skills. Students will have the opportunity to respond critically to readings, develop active, critical reading and comprehension skills through context clues, detecting main idea(s) and supporting details, learning word collocations, and carrying out academic discussions. Assessments include reading tests reading circles/discussions, as well as vocabulary assessments.
Academic Skills for Success at University This course was designed to support both prospective and current students within an academic learning environment. It is made up of 6 comprehensive modules aimed at cultivating and disseminating prior knowledge as well as informing and motivating students while navigating the challenges of academic study.
Introduction to Speech This course introduces introduces academic speaking and listening skills to international students through readings and speech manuscripts to develop their skills in oral communication. It allows students the opportunity to speak frequently and improve their skills of writing and presenting effective speeches. Assignments include note-taking from lectures and academic readings, speeches, listening tests, and academic discussion.
Pronunciation & Conversation This course is designed to provide students with both theory and practice of pronunciation. It provides students with ample opportunities to speak and practice through regular conversation and in-class presentations. Emphasis is placed on vowel sounds, as well as consonants, rhythm, stress, and intonation.
Not Lost in Translation: The Practice & Theory of Intercultural Communication This course is designed to allow students to explore the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with intercultural communication through theory and practice. Students will have the opportunity to examine cultural values, practices, symbols, rituals, and nonverbal and verbal communication. Examples and projects are based on language and storytelling in literature, film, music, popular culture, food, fashion, and more.
